ALL INDIA CONGRESS COMMITEE(AICC) named Reddy as the leader of Congress Legislature Party, following the elected MLAs' resolution authorizing AICC to nominate the leader paving way for him to become the become chief minister of telangana

On 7 December 2023, he took oath as the Chief Minister of Telangana making him the second person to hold the post.  On the day of his swearing-in, the iron barricades at the entrance to the chief minister's office were removed. Reddy announced his availability at the office to listen to people's grievances daily from 8 December 2023, reflecting the promise of people's government.
